Among the famous surgeons of the past was a Frenchman, Ambroise Pare, who lived in the 1500's. He has been called the father of military medicine.

He abolished the harmful practice of pouring boiling oil on wounds to sterilize them.

Ambroise Pare improved surgical techniques to such an extent that he is considered the father of modern surgery.
