Edward Jenner - Smallpox is stemmed

The first vaccination against smallpox was performed by Edward Jenner, English "country" physician, in Berkeley.

Educate from a cowpox pustule on the hand of dairymaid Sarah Nelmes was inserted into scratches on the arms of James Phipps, May 14, 1796. The vaccination was effective.

Jenner published his findings in 1798. Despite oppostion, vaccination soon became accepted practice.
